It has been said by me before that I hate to run.
It has also been said by me that if you DO see me running, you better look for the bear chasing me!
Sooooo, friends, I guess that means I need to warn you — a wild bear must have escaped the zoo and be roaming our neighborhood … because Mama is going running!
Here’s the scoop.
Son-of-mine is just 13 or so weeks away from being a First Degree Black Belt. Actually, let me rephrase that. Son-of-mine is 13 or so weeks away from EARNING his First Degree Black Belt. Over the past several years I have realized that a black belt is an honor never given but always earned!! It takes great effort and commitment to become a black belt. By both the student and the parent. I guess if it were easy, everyone would do it.
Anyways, only 13 weeks to go.
And if I thought it was long and hard before … I was sadly mistaken 🙂 With only 13 or so weeks to go my son has entered what they call “Prep Cycle”. Actually, I think “Prep Cycle” is just their warm and fuzzy way of saying “13 weeks of making you work and sweat so hard that you puke your guts out and slip into the fetal position sucking your thumb talking gibberish” 🙂 Just kidding. It’s not really that bad.
It’s just I have learned that at Black Belt Testing a major portion of the test is physical fitness. Son-of-mine will be required to run 2 miles … then immediately after that spend the next 5 or so hours taking a Physical Fitness test, and sparring, and doing memorized Taekwondo forms. Then the next day he’ll show up for more and break boards [we hope!].
Oh my my my. This is going to take a commitment. This is going to take effort. From all of us.
Enter … said … bear.
In order for him to succeed we need to train him. Train him in ways like a marathon runner would train. But see, in case you didn’t know it, did I tell you that I hate to run!! Geesh. What am I supposed to do? Google to the rescue!
I found online this schedule from “Couch to 5K” in two months time. And since son-of-mine is too young to run himself … guess who gets to run with him 3x a week?
*Note to self: Make sure son remembers how to dial 9-1-1.*
Anyways,Week #1 officially begins tonight and this is what we’ll be doing:
Walk Briskly for 5 minutes.
Run for 1 minute then walk for 3 minutes. Do this for a total of 20 minutes.
Cool Down Walk for 5 minutes.
Not too bad. *Gulp* I think.
Nah, I’m sure we can do this, right?? … Well, I”m sure HE can but the jury is still out on Mama. Stick around friends. This should be fun … or at least funny if nothing else.
